My New Years resolution this year was to commit myself to blogging about books. I had recently just come off the longest reading slump of my life, and my hope was to stave off ever falling into such a slump again. Well, that and my husband begged me to find an activity other than house chores (my go-to when I feel bored). I decided to step up to the plate and take on the blogging challenge.
I started a book blog on Tumblr, but never felt like I connected with the Booklr community. There are so many talented folks on Tumblr, so many very creative ways they express their love and interest for books that left me feeling…inadequate. You see, I’m not the most artistic person. Far from it. I can’t draw to save my life, I take crappy photos, and my brain just does not come up with clever ways to express my feelings. I decided early on in the year the best place for my blog may not be Tumblr after all, although I do still maintain a presence on the site so I can re-post all the wonderful, creative book things I find enjoyable.
Next, I moved from a blogging platform to Goodreads. Now Goodreads was pretty good to me. It was very straightforward and required no extra creativity on my part (hallelujah), but my audience was minuscule at best. Additionally, I wanted to do more than just write reviews – I wanted to promote books and bookish things I found interesting. I still have a presence on Goodreads, and will continue to do so. However, I needed a little more creative control than Goodreads could afford me.
I started looking at larger, popular blogs to determine their techniques and successes. The majority of them used WordPress, a blogging site I had used previously for other projects. However, they self-hosted their site and a majority of them used plugins to help organize their books (such as the Ultimate Book Blogger). After talking at length with my husband, I decided to give self-hosting on WordPress a shot. I wanted my previous book reviews to migrate with me so I spent about a week transferring all my reviews from Goodreads to my new website.
So here I am. A nine month pregnant geek ready and willing to take my love affair for books to the next level. I honestly do not know if this will be the best bloggin’ platform for me. For that matter, I do not know if blogging is a passing hobby or an ultimate passion. But I’m excited for the chance to find out. I hope you come along as I start this adventure.
